Shopify Product Images Without the Background
Shopify displays product images at the same size only when they share one aspect ratio, and 2048×2048 usually displays best for square ones. A catalog shot on different days rarely matches. Drop the photos below to cut out every background in one batch.

Free or Pro for Shopify photos
On the free plan, the background turns transparent on every photo, up to 40 per batch, with no sign-up and no watermark. Each photo keeps its own size and framing.
Pro, $29 once, adds the Shopify product 2048×2048 output. Each photo is cropped to the product and centered on a white 2048×2048 canvas with a 8% margin on every side, so the product reaches 84% of the width or height. It's saved as a JPG kept under 20 MB, and the batch downloads as one ZIP, renamed for your SKUs. See pricing.
Transparent PNG or white JPG for Shopify?
Shopify doesn't set a background color for product images, so it's a store design choice. A transparent PNG lets the theme's own background show around the product (the PNG background removerpage explains why only PNG can do that). If the theme has a colored or textured background, the product sits on it with no box around it.
A white JPG looks the same on every theme and is usually the smaller file. It's the safer pick if you might change themes, or if the same photos also go to a marketplace that wants white. The tool starts on transparent PNG here; switch the Output menu to White background for JPGs.
Why product images jump around in a collection
A collection page lines products up in a grid. When one photo is square, the next portrait and the next a wide phone shot, Shopify can't show them at the same size, and the grid looks uneven. Shopify's fix is one consistent aspect ratio for every featured image.
The Shopify preset puts every product on the same 2048×2048 square with the same 8% margin, so a mug and a poster fill their squares the same way. Run the whole catalog through in batches and the grid evens out.
FAQ
What size should Shopify product images be?
Shopify's help center says 2048×2048 px usually displays best for square product images, and accepts images up to 5000×5000 px or 25 megapixels, under 20 MB. Pro's Shopify preset saves every photo at 2048×2048.
Should Shopify product photos be PNG or JPG?
Shopify calls PNG the best file type for most product images, followed by JPEG. Use a transparent PNG if your theme's background should show through. Use a white JPG if you want the same white behind every product whatever the theme does.
Why are my product images different sizes in a collection?
Shopify only displays images at the same size when every featured image shares one aspect ratio. Phone shots, supplier photos and old crops rarely do. Putting the whole catalog on one canvas fixes it, which is what the Shopify preset does.
Is it free?
Transparent PNGs, white and solid-color backgrounds are free for up to 40 photos per batch, with no watermark. Pro, $29 once, adds the 2048×2048 Shopify size, bulk rename and one ZIP per batch.
