How to take the photo

  1. Stand a step away from a plain wallThe tool replaces the wall, but a clean edge between hair and wall gives it less to guess. The step keeps your shadow off it.
  2. Face a windowDaylight from the front lights both cheeks evenly. Skip the flash: it leaves a shine on the forehead.
  3. Look into the lens with a neutral faceMouth closed, glasses off, hair away from your eyes. Ask someone else to press the button, because a selfie bends the face.
  4. Keep the whole head in viewCamera at eye height, a couple of metres back, with your head and the top of your shoulders in the shot. The frame does the cropping.

The two sizes and their rules

These are the numbers the guides in the tool are built from. Each comes from the government page named under the table.

The 35×45 mm size is also what many EU and Schengen countries, Australia and others ask for, but each sets its own head height and background. The guides use the UK's 29 to 34 mm, so look up your own country's page if it isn't the UK.

Frame the head with the guides

Drag the photo and zoom until the top of your head sits in the upper shaded band and your chin in the lower one. The bands are cut from the head-height rule, so any top and chin inside them gives a head that is neither too small nor too large. The dashed line down the middle is for your nose. Switch the Standard menu and the frame, the bands and the download size change with it.

The tool has no face detection. It cuts the person out and you place the head by eye, so nothing analyses your face.

The sheet download is a 4×6 in page at 300 dpi with 6 photos for 2×2 in or 8 for 35×45 mm, and thin grey lines to cut along. Take the file to a pharmacy or a photo kiosk and order a 4×6 print. If the kiosk offers to fit or crop the picture, turn that off, then measure one photo with a ruler before you cut the rest.

Your photo is never uploaded

An ID photo is not a picture to hand to a stranger's server. Here the photo is not uploaded anywhere, and closing the tab clears it. The first run takes a little longer to get ready; after that it's quick.

FAQ

Will my photo be accepted?

That depends on the photo meeting the rules, not on the tool that made it. The guides here match the head height and background in the table above, but an office can still refuse a photo for glare, a shadow across the face, a smile or glasses, and no frame guide checks those. Read the official requirements for your country first.

Can I use it for a visa?

Sometimes. Visa photo rules are set by each embassy and can differ from the passport rules in head size and background. The US visa photo is also 2×2 in, but check the visa page of the country you are applying to before you print.

Is it free?

Yes. One photo at a time, no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many you make. The same engine, run on a whole folder, is the Bulk Background Remover on the home page.

Does it work on a phone?

Not yet. Take the photo with your phone, then make it on a laptop or desktop computer. On a phone, the page offers to send you the link so you can open it there. A phone version is on the way.
