Why a cut-out turns black on Etsy
A transparent PNG stores no color for the empty area, only the instruction to show what's behind it. Etsy doesn't support it, and the empty area shows up black. The product photo you cut out so carefully lands in your listing on a black square.
The fix is to save the cut-out with a background in it. This tool does that in one step: the White background and Solid color outputs save a JPG, and JPG has no way to hold transparency, so there's nothing left for Etsy to turn black. Keep the transparent PNG versions for places that do support them, like mockups and your own site.
Framing for Etsy's thumbnails
Etsy shows the same photo cropped three ways across the site: square, portrait and landscape. A product shot tight to the edges loses part of itself in at least one of them. Etsy's advice is to shoot further back, keep the item in the center and upload landscape photos rather than square crops.

Why does my transparent PNG show a black background on Etsy?
