Why Does My PNG Have a White Background?

By , who builds this tool · Updated

A PNG has a white background when the white is stored in its pixels, when the app exported a background layer, or when the viewer paints transparency white. The .png extension alone does not make a file transparent: PNG only allows transparency, and a file saved from a flat image keeps its white until you cut the subject out and save a transparent PNG. Work through these fixes in order.

  1. Test the file on a colored backgroundPlace the PNG on a colored slide or page. If the white disappears, the file is fine and your viewer was drawing transparency as white.
  2. Hide the background layer or fillIn Procreate, hide the Background Color layer. In Figma, turn off Show in exports for the frame fill. In Photoshop or Illustrator, remove any background layer or artboard color, then export again.
  3. Cut the subject outIf the white is part of the picture (a JPG saved as PNG, a flattened export, a screenshot), cut the subject out and save a transparent PNG.
  4. Remove white by color for logosFor a logo or signature on plain white, remove the white by color instead of cutting out a subject.

Why is the white not transparent?

Most "my PNG has a white background" cases start with an image that never had transparency. A JPG renamed to .png, a photo converted with a free converter, a screenshot and a flattened export all carry their background as ordinary pixels. Converting the format copies those pixels across.

The reason is in the formats. MDN states that JPEG does not support an alpha channel, so a JPG has no transparent areas to carry over. The alpha channel is the part of a PNG that stores how opaque each pixel is. A PNG saved from a JPG either has no alpha channel at all or has one where every pixel, white ones included, is fully opaque.

The fix is to remove the background from the picture itself. In the PNG background remover, the AI finds the subject, and the Output menu defaults to Transparent PNG. The free plan covers up to 40 images per batch with no sign-up and no watermark, and photos are never uploaded. If an edge looks rough, Touch up (the pencil) erases or restores it before you download.

A logo or signature on plain white

A flat logo, scan or signature on a clean white page does not need a subject cut-out. Removing the white by color turns every near-white pixel transparent, with a tolerance setting that decides how close to white counts. Thin lines survive better this way than with an AI cut-out.

Check the result for white parts inside the artwork. A white letter or highlight is also white, so it goes transparent along with the page. Touch up can paint those areas back.

Why is my PNG saving with a white background?

When you drew or designed the image yourself, the white is often a layer the app added. The PNG is behaving correctly: it faithfully saved a white layer you could not see as a layer.

Procreate is the classic case. Its handbook says each document comes with an inbuilt Background Color layer and that you can hide the Background Color to get a transparent background for exporting as a PNG. Untick that layer's visibility checkbox, then export the PNG again.

Figma works the same way with frames. Its help center explains that when you export a frame with a fill, you can hide the fill in the exported file by deselecting the Show in exports checkbox in the Fill section of the right sidebar. Figma also notes that PNGs are best used for images that involve transparency, so the format is not the problem there either.

The same pattern applies in other editors: find the white layer, fill or page color, hide it, and export again.

Why do Photoshop and Illustrator export a white PNG?

In Photoshop and Illustrator, a white PNG usually comes from one of three places: a filled Background layer, a white fill on an artboard or a large rectangle behind the artwork, or an export setting that has transparency switched off. Menu names differ between versions, so check three things rather than one setting: no layer or artboard behind the artwork is filled with white, the PNG export has its transparency option on, and the preview in the export dialog shows the checkerboard rather than white.

If the artwork itself came from a flat photo, no export setting will help. That case belongs to the first section: the white has to be removed from the pixels.

Why does my PNG look white on one screen and fine on another?

Sometimes the file is fine and the screen is the problem. Some image viewers, chat apps and web pages fill transparent areas with white instead of showing a checkerboard or the page color. The PNG looks white-backed but is not.

A quick test settles it. Put the file on a colored background, such as a colored slide in PowerPoint or Google Slides, or a page in Word. If the white vanishes and the color shows through, the file is a real transparent PNG. The same thing happens with black instead of white, covered in why a transparent PNG shows a black background. Both come from how the viewer draws transparency, not from a damaged file. For app-specific fixes, see PNG not transparent in PowerPoint, Word or Google Slides and PNG not transparent on iPhone.

Which white background cause do you have?

Open the file on a colored background first. A white box that stays means white is in the pixels, and the answer is a cut-out or a color removal. White that disappears means the file is fine. If the PNG was exported from an app and shows white on a colored background, look in the source file for a background layer, fill or page color that is still switched on.

It also helps to know what a transparent PNG is made of. The W3C PNG specification says that an alpha value of zero represents full transparency, so a pixel is transparent only when its alpha says so. A white pixel with full opacity is simply white, whatever the file extension says. What a transparent PNG is goes through this in more detail.

If you have many files

A shop catalog, a set of icons or a folder of screenshots usually means the same fix repeated. The PNG background remover takes up to 40 images per batch on the free plan and saves each one as a transparent PNG. Run the colored-background test on a few results: if one still shows a white box, open Touch up on that image, erase the leftover edge and download it again.

FAQ

How to get rid of the white background on a PNG?

Cut the subject out and save the result as a transparent PNG. For a logo or signature on plain white, remove the white by color instead. If the file came from an app, hide its background layer or fill and export again.

Why is my PNG saving with a white background?

The app is exporting a background layer or fill, or the image never had transparency and the white is part of the pixels. Hide the background layer or fill before exporting, or cut the subject out of the flat image.

How do I make a PNG have a transparent background?

Start from artwork with no background layer, or cut the subject out of a photo, then export as PNG. The PNG format supports an alpha channel, but the file only has transparency if the pixels were made transparent first.

Why does my PNG look white on one screen and fine on another?

Some viewers and apps draw transparent areas as white. Place the file on a colored background to check: if the white disappears, the file is a real transparent PNG and only the viewer is showing white.
